| Meryemana, the House of the Virgin Mary, is becoming a popular pilgrimage for
Catholics. It is thought to be the place where St. John took the mother of Jesus after the
crucifixion and from which she ascended to heaven. Pope Paul VI visited the site in 1967
and confirmed its authenticity. For those who are not religious it is still very much a
worthwhile place to visit. Situated 5 km south of Ephesus it is a beautiful drive up
through pine scented forests to arrive at Meryemana, a ‘perfect’ tiny chapel steeped
in atmosphere and set on the top of a hill to enjoy a wonderful array of views. There is a
small restaurant at the site and it is a particularly memorable site at which to enjoy
breakfast and start the day off in peace. |
